Awkward eye contact

This will hopefully be the first of many entries or logs that are about anything I want to share but not planned in advance.

Today (05/06/2025) I was roughly five or six miles into a chill singletrack trail I love riding and was recording a POV video to show it off (keep an eye out). After finishing my run I doubled back to do it again and for some reason I stopped riding, either to take in the view or to consider setting up my GoPro up for a stationary shot. I glance to my left right as I am about to start pedaling again, I see a deer!

Simply observing, ears twitching waiting for me to make a move. I wasn’t 100% sure if this was a yearling or a doe and in case of latter I did not want there to be babies near by and it feel threatened. I decided to turn back and when I went to flip my bike around that was enough to startle it and send it hopping on its way.

What I find so odd is the fact that for a reason I can’t explain, I was urged to stop at the exact spot on the trail where I could look over and see a deer that was looking right at me…

For the rest of the ride all I could think is “this is proof I am an apex predator” lol. Ego aside it trips me out to think of the evolutionary trait or subconscious behavior that led to me stopping. In our society today there is SO much internally and externally going on that we tune out. Maybe what I perceive as my ‘sixth sense’ is really a combination of sensory input like sounds (like: rustle of leaves), and movement in my peripheral vision (like: deer coming to a stop when it heard or saw me).

I am probably overthinking this whole thing, but I felt it would be fun to share the story along with the photo 🙂
